soportar vs apoyar

'Support' splits in two. Soportar is to bear or put up with. Apoyar is to back someone or lean something on a surface.

soportar

To bear, endure, stand — or to hold up a weight structurally.

  • No soporto el calor.

    I can't stand the heat.

Toleration of something unpleasant. Almost always in the negative.

  • No lo soporto.

    I can't stand him.

Strong dislike of a person. Stronger than 'no me gusta'.

  • Estas vigas soportan todo el techo.

These beams support the whole roof.

    Structural support — physical load.

apoyar

To back someone emotionally or politically, or to lean or rest something on a surface.

  • Te apoyo en lo que decidas.

I support you whatever you decide.

Moral or practical backing. The everyday 'support' for people.

  • Apoyó la bici contra la pared.

He leaned the bike against the wall.

Physical resting. Apoyarse = to lean on.

  • Muchos votantes apoyan la propuesta.

    Many voters support the proposal.

    Political backing.

Tricky bit

'Te soporto' means 'I put up with you' — not at all 'I support you'. Learners who want to be kind and say 'te soporto' give offence. Use 'te apoyo'.
