Plain English: what we collect, why, and what you can ask us to do about it.

Who is responsible

Verb Wise is built and operated by Richard Wells, based in the United Kingdom. That makes Richard Wells the data controller for any personal data the app handles.

You can reach us via the enquiry form at richard-wells.com

What we collect

Your progress — cards studied, cards marked as learned and your favourites — is stored locally in your own browser. It never leaves your device unless you tell us otherwise.

If a sign-in feature is added, we would collect your account email address so you can log back in and so we can link your purchase to you.

There is no third-party advertising in Verb Wise, and no advertising or tracking profiles are built.

Anonymous usage counts

To understand how the free trial is working, Verb Wise records a small set of anonymous, aggregate usage events: an app visit (at most once a day), the start of your 7-day trial, the trial countdown reminders you actually see at 5, 3, 2 and 1 days, the trial ending, starting a checkout, and a completed purchase.

These events are stored against a random identifier generated in your browser. It is not linked to your name, your email address, your IP address or any advertising identifier, and it is never used for advertising, profiling or targeting. We only ever look at totals — for example how many devices saw the 3-day reminder.

Because the identifier lives in your browser storage, clearing your browser data removes it and a new random identifier is created the next time you visit. That means these counts are approximate by design.

What we never do

We do not sell your personal data to third parties. We do not share it for marketing purposes.

Our lawful basis (UK GDPR)

Where we process personal data, we rely on performance of a contract — giving you the app and the content you paid for — and on our legitimate interest in running and improving a small, reliable service.

Cookies and local storage

We only use functional, essential storage: the browser storage that remembers your progress and whether you have unlocked the full deck. There are no tracking cookies and no advertising cookies.

We also set one essential cookie containing a random, meaningless code. It exists solely to remember that this browser has already had a free trial, so the trial cannot simply be restarted. Alongside it we keep a one-way scrambled fingerprint of the network the request came from — your IP address itself is never stored and can never be recovered from it, and it is never shared with anyone.

For the same purpose we also check a small set of ordinary device characteristics that your browser sends to every website — screen size, time zone, language and similar. These are combined into a one-way scrambled code so that a private window or cleared storage on the same device does not start a second free trial. The characteristics themselves are never stored, the code cannot be reversed or matched to you on any other website, and it is used for nothing except the free trial.

Your rights

You have the right to ask for a copy of your personal data, to have it corrected, and to have it erased. You can reach us via the enquiry form at richard-wells.com and we will respond as quickly as we reasonably can.

You can also clear everything stored on your device yourself at any time from the Settings page.

How long we keep things

Progress data stays in your browser until you clear it. We do not keep server-side personal data beyond what is needed for your account and your purchase record.

Complaints

If you are unhappy with how we have handled your data, contact us first — you can reach us via the enquiry form at richard-wells.com. You also have the right to complain to the UK Information Commissioner's Office.
