volverse vs hacerse (become)

Both mean 'become' but for different kinds of change. Hacerse is chosen or earned. Volverse is a deep change that happens to you.

hacerse

Becoming something through effort, choice or gradual progress — professions, religions, rich, old.

  • Se hizo médico a los treinta.

He became a doctor at thirty.

A deliberate path. You work to become a profession.

  • Se hizo rico con una app.

He got rich off an app.

Result of effort or luck over time.

  • Me estoy haciendo mayor.

    I'm getting old.

    Gradual change over time.

volverse

Becoming something radically different, often unwanted — a lasting change in character or state.

  • Se volvió muy desconfiado.

    He became very distrustful.

A change in personality that's hard to reverse. Usually after an experience.

  • El mundo se ha vuelto loco.

    The world has gone mad.

Sweeping change of state. Volverse loco = go mad.

  • Se volvió insoportable.

    She became unbearable.

Not a choice. She changed and the change stuck.

Tricky bit

The 'become' family: ponerse (temporary emotional or physical change), volverse (deep change), hacerse (effort or choice), quedarse (ending up in a state: quedarse calvo, quedarse ciego). Match the verb to how the change happened.
