ser vs estar

ser
Ser encodes what something fundamentally is — identity, category, origin, material.
estar
Estar encodes current state — how something is right now, not what it is.

Why the subjunctive

Wanting someone else to do or be something is a wish, so the verb after que goes in the subjunctive.

  • easyA2

    Quiero que seas feliz.

I want you to be happy.

    Form: seas (ser)

Different subjects (yo / tú) after a wish means que + subjunctive. Never 'quiero que eres'.
