estar de acuerdo vs acordar

'Agree' needs two Spanish forms. Estar de acuerdo is to share an opinion. Acordar is to settle a decision together.

estar de acuerdo

To agree in opinion — you think the same as someone else.

  • Estoy de acuerdo contigo.

    I agree with you.

Always estar de acuerdo, never 'ser de acuerdo'. Use con + person.

  • No estamos de acuerdo en eso.

    We don't agree on that.

    Disagreement. 'En' introduces the topic.

  • ¿Estás de acuerdo con la propuesta?

Do you agree with the proposal?

    Agreement with an idea.

acordar

To agree on a decision or arrangement — make a deal.

  • Acordamos un precio.

    We agreed a price.

A negotiated outcome. Active verb of making an agreement.

  • Se acordó cerrar la tienda.

It was agreed to close the shop.

    Passive se for formal decisions.

  • Nos pusimos de acuerdo en la fecha.

    We agreed on the date.

Ponerse de acuerdo = to reach agreement. Common in conversation.

Tricky bit

'Acordarse' is to remember, not to agree. 'Acordamos' = we agreed, 'nos acordamos' = we remember. The reflexive changes the whole meaning.
